History
Bannock is often associated throughout North America as a First Nations (Native American), Métis and Inuit cuisine. However, the word “Bannock” comes from the Northern and Scottish dialects. It was first referred to as “bannuc” in early writings to the 8th century. It historic use was primarily in Ireland, Scotland and Northern England. In Scotland, before the 19th century, bannocks were cooked on a bannock stane (Scots for stone), a large, flat, rounded piece of sandstone, placed directly onto a fire, used as a cooking surface.

It is believed that Scottish fur traders called Selkirk introduced Bannock to the Indigenous people of North America during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Scots cooked it in a griddle called a bannock stone, which they placed on the floor before a fire. Bannock soon became as a staple in the diets of early settlers and fur traders. Today, most often, Bannock is baked in an oven, or deep –fried (fry bread).

Today
Even though Bannock is a simply recipe, many people do not have the time or effort to make it. Trying to make it the same each time can be daunting. Like most foods in this modern time convenience is important. Most people go to the store to buy their bread, although they may make it occasionally, buying at the store is convenient, the same for pizza and other foods.
